Each month we’ll be interviewing a different team member about what they do at The Modern Connection, and in their spare time.

June’s employee spotlight focuses on Camilla Baker, Social Media Manager. Read on to learn more about her role at TMC!

What is your position here at The Modern Connection and what do you do?

I’m a Social Media Manager, which is a really fun and dynamic role here at TMC. Social Media Managers oversee our clients’ various social media accounts, doing everything from creating content to writing website blogs to interacting with followers. Every day is different, and it’s fun to be able to take on different voices and have a unique experience with each client and their accounts. In addition to my role as a Social Media Manager, I also write website copy for clients. Chloe handles the design and build, and I put together the written copy to help organically optimize the client’s position on search engine results pages and create a cohesive voice across the website.


What did you do before working at The Modern Connection?

Before working at The Modern Connection, I worked for The Modern Connection! I was an intern here at TMC during the summer of 2016, and interned remotely from Athens, GA during my senior year at The University of Georgia. I had an awesome experience as an intern, and was lucky enough to be hired as a Jr. Social Media Manager when I graduated in May 2017.


How did you learn to do what you do?

A lot of my experience in social media came from my time as an intern with The Modern Connection. The Social Media Managers and the rest of the team here at TMC taught me so much about what I do today. Additionally, though I was an English major at UGA, I took classes offered by the university’s New Media Studies Institute, which covered everything from the history of media to website building and beyond. My new media studies helped me develop the necessary skills to write for the web as well as understand the opportunities digital media tools provide to businesses in building brand awareness and developing relationships with their customer base.

What is your favorite project you’ve worked on at The Modern Connection?

There are a number of projects I’m proud to have been a part of at TMC, but I would say one of my favorites was helping a client in their campaign for #GivingTuesday, the national day of charitable giving, in the fall of 2017. The client was a business that works closely with various nonprofit companies and fundraising vehicles around the country, and I helped conduct the social media campaign to drive awareness for #GivingTuesday. I put together social media kits for their clients and partners, worked closely with Chloe to curate graphics that were displayed in Times Square, constantly updated accounts and interacted on social media the day of the event, composed reports following the day, and more. There were months of preparation that went into the campaign, and it was a lot of work. But in the end, it was more than worth it; it was the highest #GivingTuesday on record, with the client processing over $60 million donated to thousands of organizations in just 24 hours.


What do you love about working at The Modern Connection?

I love that every day is different, that I’m able to be creative, and that I get to help businesses build relationships through social media. But most of all, I love the people at The Modern Connection. I get to come to work every day and work with an extremely talented and intelligent group of women, who I also consider friends. It’s an amazing work environment where we support and inspire each other.


What is your favorite quote that applies to your work?

It’s not one quote in particular, but every day my dad sends a message in our family group text, often including some inspirational advice for the work week. He always reminds us to work hard and make the most out of the time we have. It’s a nice reminder that each day is a new opportunity to push myself to do the best work I can.


What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I mostly enjoy the simple pleasures: reading, going to the movies, or hanging out with friends and family. And I’m no stranger to a good Netflix binge session. I also take advantage of living in the best city in the U.S (no, seriously). Even though I grew up in Charleston and have lived here most of my life, there’s always something exciting to do or a new place to discover.
